Heartfire

Sislie never expected to become Queen of the Fae but a tragic death plunges her into a new and unwelcome destiny. Just as she’s about to leave her beloved forest glade for Queensdale Palace, she’s tricked and kidnapped by an old woman, who hides her in a hidden cabin in the mountains.

Sleeping potion keeps her groggy, and steals her memory. But something keeps nagging at her. Something she’s supposed to do, if only she could remember what it is.

Sislie has to find the courage to trust her own powers so she can save the Land. But can she get to Queensdale in time to foil the ancient monarch who’ll do anything to stop her?

Join Sislie and her unlikely companions as she faces impossible odds to claim her destiny and usher in a new era to the Land of the Fae.

How Did this Happen?

How did this all happen?

Like many people, I’ve dabbled with writing much of my life – journaling, bits of poetry and short stories, you know, the usual stuff.

But a few years ago when I took a writing class, a group of us continued on in a writing group which met from time to time. We usually pulled pieces of paper into a hat, which contained words or phrases to be used as writing prompts.

One day we had our group at my new house, the same day I was thinking about where to hang my pictures. I got an idea.

This time we used the art as a way to practice describing what we see. We each chose a picture, and the one I chose was a print by Irene Klar, a Canadian artist from Alberta. It was a picture of three native dancers.

I started describing the middle dancer, who was younger than the other two. And as I wrote, the little miracle happened – a story started flowing out of my pencil. Amazed and delighted, I started using other art as a writing prompt, and each time, a story started to emerge. Finally a book of Edmund Dulac illustrations from early 20th century captured my imagination, and without making reference to the stories he was illustrating, it resulted in several stories.

One of these, showing a Fairy hiding in a tree as as an old woman approached, became the opening scene of Heartfire. Where does all that come from? I dunno. I just make it up. The story captured my imagination, and some days I wrote because I wanted to know what happens next.

Testimonials

In Ieva Wool’s debut novel, we have a triumphant fantasy, featuring a classic struggle between good and evil to either destroy, or heal, the earth. Yes, there are dragons, and faeries and humans, but her crystal clear imagination gives us a whole new perspective on the interactions; she gives us a fresh world through her imagery, geography and history.

Two strengths stand out in Wool’s writing: pacing and detail. She has a strong but light touch in her writing, carrying us smoothly along on an amazing journey without beating us over the head. And her details contribute greatly to the success of this debut: she takes the time to describe the characters and settings so that we can see them clearly and envision the scene and the action. Both strengths gently draw you into her world and give us a ‘river rafting” experience: some placid, calm sections and some treacherous rapids.

Overall, an imaginative, detailed and well-crafted debut. Leaves us hoping that IevaWool has another novel in her for our enjoyment.

I like this book! It’s a great read. It held my interest throughout, well-paced. I like the balance of perspectives and measured unfolding of insights gained by Sislie throughout the scenes.

I just wanted to take a peek at the book as I’m in the middle of tax season. But for some reason, I ended up reading the first four chapters in my peek! Great book..  it just pulls the reader in and moves quickly.

Wow, what a pleasure! It kept me engaged, the characters, the plot development, the measured descriptions, the element of mystery…I think teens would love it too – there’s this maturity plus a kind of naivety that appeals to a wide range of people.
I gobbled it up and am looking forward to the next one.
